EARLY EXPLORATIONS Cartographers in ancient times gave Antarctica the name "Terra Incognita Australis", which means: unknown southern land. 2,500 years ago, the Greek talked about it, imagining its existence.

The first explorations to the Antarctic continent date back to the year 1774, when the navigator James Cook came upon the South Sandwich Islands.
